Our last day in New Zealand was spent in the Coromandel Peninsula.
Keely and I were determined to make it to Cathedral Cove, even after the agonising pain we were in from our 7 hour walk at Tongariro the day before.
When driving here, make sure you put “Cathedral Cove” into your maps, not “Cathedral Cove Dive” assuming it is the same place! The latter will take you on an hour detour that doesn’t get you to the correct destination! Although, this way we did get to drive by beautiful ocean views and through the little township of Coromandel. I suggest this would be a nice stop off at lunch time!
Getting to Cathedral Cove-
You have to either walk or kayak. You cannot drive down to the cove.
It is a 45 minute walk there, and a 45 minute walk back from the closest car park which gets VERY full. Try and come as early as possible.
There is a small gas station, café, and ice-creamery 5 minutes drive from the Cathedral Cove Carpark.
If you have the whole day in the Coromandel Peninsula people often stop off at Hot Water Beach as well! Time didn’t permit for us to do both.
