Jindabyne and Kosciuszko National Park, located in NSW’s Snowy Mountains, have plenty to offer year round. Kosciuszko National Park is home to Australia’s highest mountain (Mount Kosciuszko) at 2,228 metres. The area is most popular during the winter months for skiing and snowboarding, but there are many beautiful bush walking, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding opportunities here during the warmer months.
Getting here from the Sydney-region will take around 6 hours. If you’re after a full weekend of activities I suggest driving down Friday night, so you have all of Saturday and Sunday until the early afternoon to explore! There’s a lot to see and do. Here’s a list of what I did during my weekend here:
Hiked the Main Range Walk- Charlotte Pass to Mount Kosciuszko (22km)
Kosciuszko National Park’s terrain is very rocky, with minimal plant and wildlife due to the harsh winds and snow in winter. Along the 9-hour hike a few of the highlights include the Snowy River Bridge, Seamans Hut, Blue Lake and the Carruthers Peak. Conquering Mount Kosciuszko, and completing the 22km walk was equal parts liberating and exhausting. As an Australian, I feel proud to say I’ve now climbed the highest mountain in our country!
What you’ll need to bring/wear:
- Hiking boots- your feet will get very sore
- Water- at least 2L
- Food- lunch and snacks that provide sustenance
- Wind jacket
On Sunday morning, with aching muscles and joints, we strolled around the beautiful Lake Jindabyne. You can canoe, kayak, windsurf, fish, or sail.
Lake Crackenback is surrounded by mountains, a resort and spa! If you choose to stay here there are plenty of on-site activities such as trampolining, archery and a tennis court if you’re tired of bush walking. There’s also a restaurant located here so you literally never have to leave.
Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery
This is a beautiful boutique schnapps distillery located in Thredbro Valley. The schnapps are made on site and you are offered free tastings on arrival. The menu is made up Austrian and Hungarian delicacies- make sure you order the apple strudel. The decor of the restaurant and surroundings make this the perfect pit stop on any trip to the Snowy Mountains!
